So, So That, Such That

@ 기본내용: so, so that, such that은 서로 다른 뜻이다.
- *So* means 'therefore'. (그러므로)
- *So that* means 'in order that'. (~ 하기 위해)
- *Such that* means 'in such a way that'. (~ 하게)

아래 세 문장은 모두 GOOD인 문장들인데 뜻은 다르다.

I love you, so I am happy.
-> I love you; therefore, I am happy.

I love you, so that I am happy.
-> The reason I love you is that doing so makes me happy.

I love you such that I am happy.
-> The way I love you makes me, or allows me to be, happy.


so나 so that은 무지 잘 알 것 같아서 such that 예문만을 적어보면.

GOOD: Misha set the placecards such that no one was sitting near an enemy.

GOOD: Holly wrote her program such that patients would not feel threatened when they were asked to use it.

GOOD: Lyn greeted Max on his return such that he was exceedingly surprised and pleased.


내 논문을 작성할 때, 문교수님이 such that 이 들어간 표현을 쓰시길래
그리고, 다른 논문에서도 such that이 간간히 보이길래
such that의 정확한 용법이 궁금해서 오래동안 고민했다.

그러다가 개인적으로
such는 '그렇게'이고, that 문장이 그렇게를 수식한다고 결론내렸다.
이런 방식으로 위의 문장들을 해석해보면,

I love you such that I am happy.
나는 너를 그렇게 사랑한다, 내가 행복하게.

GOOD: Misha set the placecards such that no one was sitting near an enemy.
미샤는 좌석표를 그렇게 배치하였다, 아무도 적 근처에 앉지 않게.

GOOD: Lyn greeted Max on his return such that he was exceedingly surprised and pleased.
린은 맥스가 돌아왔을 때 그렇게 인사했다, 그가 지나치게 놀라고 기뻐하게.
